Somaliland recognition status 2025, United Nations Somalia sovereignty, international law Somaliland, why countries reject Somaliland independence. Somaliland recognition
MOGADISHU — Despite Israel’s historic announcement on December 26, 2024, the Republic of Somaliland remains unrecognized by 192 of the 193 United Nations member states. The global refusal to grant Hargeisa sovereign status is rooted in the African Union (AU) Constitutive Act, which prioritizes the “intangibility of borders inherited at independence.”

From the European Union to the United States, world powers maintain that recognizing Somaliland would set a “dangerous precedent” for separatist movements across the African continent. Today, the AU Chairperson reaffirmed that Somaliland is an “integral part” of the Federal Republic of Somalia, warning that unilateral recognition by external actors like Israel risks de-stabilizing the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea corridor.
