Israel’s Recognition of Somaliland
Israel’s Recognition of Somaliland : Somalia is facing heightened regional tensions following Israel’s recent decision to become the first country to formally recognize Somaliland as an independent state, a move Mogadishu has condemned as a violation of its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Protests erupted across Somalia, with tens of thousands taking to the streets in major cities to denounce the recognition, viewing it as a threat to national unity and regional stability. The Federal Government has mobilized diplomatic efforts, gaining support from over 20 countries, including China, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and others in the Arab League, which have rejected the move and reaffirmed backing for Somalia’s unity.
China explicitly opposed any attempts to “split territories” in Somalia, while Turkey warned of potential destabilization in the Horn of Africa. Somalia’s government stated that Israel’s action undermines ongoing reconciliation efforts and could embolden separatist sentiments.

Somaliland, which declared independence in 1991 and maintains relative stability, has long sought international recognition but received none until now. This development complicates stalled talks between Mogadishu and Hargeisa, previously mediated by countries like Qatar and Turkey.
Analysts warn it could exacerbate clan divisions and provide opportunities for groups like Al-Shabaab to exploit grievances. Amid this, Somalia continues to assert strong international support for its position, with President Mohamud highlighting global backing in recent statements. The issue risks spilling into broader geopolitical rivalries in the Red Sea region
